We love our beautiful, walkable Peninsula Charleston neighborhood, known as Harleston Village.
Not long ago, a few of us decided to join the growing, nation-wide grassroots movement of “Villages”. These are organizations that help neighbors age in the place where they live, offering the support they need for a lifestyle that is comfortable for them. Thus Harleston Neighbor2Neighbor (HN2N) came into being.
We offer opportunities to get to know each other better through social gatherings; educational seminars on diverse topics of interest, such as staying healthy, taking care of and making necessary adaptations to our homes, mastering new technology; and providing ways to assist each other when an extra hand is needed. In brief, the mission of HN2N is to serve as an independent, self-governing, grassroots, community-based organization to help residents remain in their homes as they age.
We have surveyed Harleston Village neighbors asking for personal input to guide us in creating a village that works for us. At the top of the list is a need for identifying reliable services for home maintenance. To meet this need, we’ve created a directory of recommended insured, licensed and bonded contractors and related businesses. See our Vendors List to find, for example, a good plumber or someone to solve your computer problem.
As an urban village, we are situated in a diverse community, so outreach to the broader community is important to us. HN2N Board members have met with Mayor Tecklenburg and other City officials, as well as our local legislators. We’ve established collaborative relationships with MUSC’s Center on Aging, the local chapter of the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC), the College of Charleston, Charleston Area Senior Citizens (CASC) and other local organizations dedicated to the well-being of an aging population.
Currently HN2N depends on contributions to cover expenses such as meeting space rental, internet fees, and insurance. As our program grows, we are likely to establish a membership fee.
To receive email information about our programs and events and news related to aging in place, you can request to be added to the HN2N email list. Phone or email John Milkereit, president of the HN2N Board, at 843-722-1185 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
